General Contractor Cornices
Cornices made by General Contractors usually are very basic but can come in handy when trying to accommodate a tight budget, cover the drapery hardware, or simply to accomplish a specific look. If you’re using GC cornices, here are some things to consider:
Height
The height that a cornice is mounted at is crucial information in the production of drapery treatments at the correct length. Drapery PMs must know if a cornice will be ceiling mounted or wall mounted at a specific height.
Dustcap
A General Contractor built cornice with a full dustcap may be constructed for extra stability and for the drapery hardware to be installed into it. Knowing the thickness of the dustcap is paramount. See “What Is A Dustcap?” for more info!
Support
Another way of producing a GC cornice is with a 1x2” support along the inside edges as a substitute for a full dustcap. If a cornice is made as such and therefore drapery hardware will be installed directly into the ceiling, the drapery PM must be notified.
Widths
A cornice width can either be specified at a constant width in all rooms or based upon the window plus a factor. EX. Cornices will be built at window width + 12”.
Depth
When GC built cornices have returns the overall width of the cornice needs to be communicated at the inside width (X) or the outside width alongside the thickness of the returns (Y). This will ensure drapery hardware is made at the correct width.
